After several years of successful collaboration with Guildford Borough Council on Weyside Urban Village, the unanimous approval of Phase 3 paves the way for the exciting next chapter in the ambitious regeneration of the former sewage treatment works site.
Forming part of the wider 1,550-home regeneration of the brownfield land, Phase 3 of the project will comprise of 187 dwellings, along with associated infrastructure, and landscaping. New homes will range from one, two and three bedroom apartments to four bedroom houses, with 40% provided as affordable.
Phase 3 encompasses the Heritage Quarter of Weyside Urban Village and takes inspiration from the site’s industrial heritage, in particular, the retained Victorian Pump House which has been a key influence on the proposed architectural character.
New homes are designed to achieve certified Passivhaus standards to provide future-proofed homes that incorporate health and wellbeing, minimise their impact on the environment and set a precedent for future phases of Weyside Urban Village. Passivhaus measures have included high performing external fabric, optimised building form and orientation, window proportions and shading to windows to mitigate overheating and harness solar gain.
Phase 3 continues the nature-led approach that was established in Phase 1, contributing to community cohesion and integration. It will deliver the central, southern section of the Wey Walk Community Green Finger which is a multifunctional green space designed for community use and play. This section will serve as a vital link, connecting Weyfield Primary Academy with the wider community, Weyside Walk, and the River Wey Navigation, creating a seamless and accessible pathway for the community. The introduction of new public realm at the Pump House with an active community square will also play a key role in providing a first impression of Weyside Urban Village.
Josh Cherry, Associate Director at JTP commented: “It is with great pride that we as a design team mark another successful and unanimous planning approval with Guildford Borough Council for this next phase at Weyside Urban Village. Phase 3 exemplifies our commitment to blending innovative design with environmental responsibility, creating homes that not only meet Passivhaus standards but also foster a sense of community and connection through thoughtfully designed green spaces and public realm. We are excited to see this transformative vision continue to take shape and enrich Guildford’s future.”
