As part of its long-term commitment to investing in skills, junior talent and the future of the construction industry, Story Homes plans to continue expanding its apprenticeship and trainee programmes, ensuring opportunities remain accessible to those looking to build a career in the housebuilding industry and related professions.
To mark National Apprenticeship Week (9 – 15 February 2026), the housebuilder is celebrating its growing apprenticeship programme, which currently includes two dedicated apprentices in its North East region: Mae Huscroft, Architectural Design and Build Apprentice, and Oliver Robinson, Commercial Apprentice.
Mae’s journey into the business is a particularly strong example of Story Homes’ approach to nurturing talent. Acting on her own initiative, Mae approached the company to request a two-week work experience placement. During that short period, she made such a positive impression that she was subsequently offered an apprenticeship with the business.
Mae said:
“I approached Story Homes to ask for work experience because I really wanted to learn more about the industry. I didn’t expect it to lead to an apprenticeship, but everyone was so supportive and encouraging. I’ve been given real responsibility, the opportunity to work towards a formal qualification, and the chance to learn from the experience of knowledgeable colleagues, which has been amazing for my confidence and development.”
Oliver, who is completing his Commercial Apprenticeship the North-East team, added:
“The apprenticeship has given me a great balance of learning and practical experience. I’m developing skills that I know will stay with me throughout my career, learning from experienced colleagues, and working towards a recognised qualification, while also feeling like a valued part of the business.”
Alongside its two dedicated apprentices, Story Homes is currently supporting a further 12 colleagues who are completing apprenticeships while continuing in their day-to-day roles. These programmes span a range of disciplines including Accounting, Construction Site Supervision, Chartered Surveying, Civil Engineering and Public Relations. In addition, the business has 11 trainee roles currently in place, underlining its commitment to investing in future talent and helping to address the skills gap within the construction sector.
Paul Eilles, Head of HR at Story Homes, said:
“Apprenticeships play a vital role in developing the next generation of talent and ensuring our industry has the skills it needs for the future. At Story Homes, we are committed to giving people the opportunity to grow with our business, whether they are starting out in their careers, changing careers, or developing new expertise to support progression in their career pathway. We are proud of the progress we’ve made and are committed to growing our apprenticeship programme over the next 12 months and beyond, working in partnership with local colleges and training providers.”
Peter Brockman, North-East Local Council Officer and Apprentice Programme Co-Ordinator, added:
“The Council’s Apprenticeship Strategy and programme are an integral part of our approach to address current and future skills needs. Apprenticeships help us to attract and retain the very best talent and to benefit from a skilled, motivated and flexible workforce. It’s encouraging to see employers like Story Homes investing in skills development and playing an active role in shaping the future workforce.”
