Store or sell? What to do with your furniture when planning for a new build

Building your own home is exciting as it often gives you full control over everything. From what size you want the rooms to be to the location of the sockets, everything is up to you. However, one thing you often have to decide is which items of furniture you intend to keep. Many people think that a new house is the chance to buy all new but that still doesn’t explain what you intend to do with the old pieces. Should you sell them, or should you put them into storage? Here are some solutions to the dilemma.

Storage

A storage unit is a great option for anyone who wants to keep a hold of certain items but doesn’t yet know when or where they want to use them. If you’re unfamiliar with the type of services available, then you could start by looking into renting a storage unit from Safestore who are one of the most popular choices in the country. You can be assured that your belongings are going to be kept in excellent conditions in a secure environment like theirs. The key advantage about this option is that you will have all the time in the world to decide where you want to put things in the new home.

Storage is also the perfect solution when you want to hold on to something but it won’t match the aesthetic of your current property. If you have built a super modern and contemporary property, your grandfather’s old armchair probably won’t match the décor. However, you might not be able to bring yourself to get rid of it just yet but you know that one day you will have the space for it. A storage unit lets you keep a hold of it for as long as you want it.

Sell

Luckily, there is a massive market for good quality, used furniture. If you have a number of pieces which you simply don’t want to keep any more, you will more than likely be able to find a good home for them to go to. You can post ads on any number of sites including social media websites like Facebook to see if someone is willing to buy your furniture. There is always a chance to get a good price for one of your pieces; even for flat-pack furniture from popular brands like IKEA if it is in good enough condition.

When selling your furniture on, remember to discuss collection with the new owner. It is no good to arrange a sale with someone only for them to never pick it up because they thought you would arrange delivery. If they are coming to get it, be very honest about where you live. If you are in a flat which only has stair access and the furniture is difficult to move, be upfront about this. It will allow them to arrange an extra hand or give you the opportunity to find someone to help.

If you have slightly more expensive or antique furniture, you may be able to sell it through an auction. Then, all you will have to do is deliver the furniture to the auction house and they will handle everything else. Remember that there will be a fee you need to pay to the auctioneer when you do this but you can still get some amazing prices; especially if the dusty painting that has been up in the attic all these years turns out to be a rare collectable!

Both Head and Heart

When trying to decide what to do with furniture, you need to consider both head and heart. If you love a certain piece then you should try to keep it. However, if you know it won’t go into the new build, selling it or putting it into storage might be the best option. Go through your rooms one by one and decide what you absolutely must keep soon!
