Sika-Membran has enabled thousands of windows to be installed at a spectacular London dockland development with an airtight seal to ensure its residents enjoy the perfect living environment. The versatile joint sealing system was specified for New Providence Wharf, a stylish residential complex in Canary Wharf, the heart of the capital’s dynamic business and financial district.
Designed by architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, New Providence Wharf comprises a cluster of riverside apartment blocks within easy reach of some of London’s finest landmarks such as the O2 Arena and the ExCel Exhibition Centre. Contractors, Lindner Facades, specified Sika-Membran for two blocks – a 44-storey private residential tower and a 12-storey affordable housing, mixed-use development – using the system to create an air and weathertight seal around an estimated 22,000m2 of façade.
Sika-Membran, from global building product manufacturer Sika, is a versatile EPDM synthetic rubber waterproofing membrane, designed to provide an efficient method of sealing construction gaps in building façades. Thin and easy to use on site, the system offers long term performance, and used in conjunction with Sika’s SikaBond TF Plus N adhesive it offers an ultra-strong bond to create an airtight seal. Solvent free, durable, UV and ozone resistant and 100% waterproof, it can be bonded to most building substrates. Being highly elastic, it can be used on uneven substrates, making it suitable for the most demanding project.
Easily cut to size, Sika-Membran helps prevent the loss of heated or cooled air from within the building, minimising wasted energy. The system has also aided in the acoustic performance of the building by helping to minimise outside noise. Sika-Membran regulates and controls the amount of moisture escaping from the inside of a building thus minimising the risk of interstitial condensation.

Manufactured in 25m x 0.6mm rolls and available in varying widths from 100mm to 1,400mm, Sika-Membran is flexible and easy to use. Once on site, contractors, Lindner Facades, simply cut it to required size and cleaned the concrete to which it was to be bonded. Sika’s advanced elastic adhesive, SikaBond TF Plus N, was then applied to the concrete surface and the Sika-Membran positioned accordingly.
A single part polyurethane based elastic adhesive, SikaBond TF Plus N has been specifically created for the bonding of Sika-Membran to a variety of building substrates. Solvent free, it offers long open times to allow for adjustment of the membrane. Also able to tolerate uneven surfaces to create a continuous seal, it eliminates the need for mechanical fixings and provides an easy yet trustworthy method of fixing the joint sealing membrane in place.
SikaGlaze® GG-735, a two-part PU grout for embedding glass panels, gave the installation
a smart, solvent-free finish. In total vision glazing (TVG, fin glazing) and glass balustrades, the glass panes are fixed to the sub-frame minimising the stress on the glass by the use of an adhesive. With SikaGlaze® the bottom glass edge is embedded in the floor rebate and therefore results in uniform stress distribution. Furthermore, they permanently transfer the forces to the support structure.
With the Sika-Membran system in place, Lindner Facades installed the buildings’ windows ensuring a perfect seal around each one to create a sustainable building envelope. Due to its reliability and simple application, Lindner Facades completed the installation comfortably.
Sika-Membran has helped ensure the latest breath-taking addition to London’s skyline is as comfortable to live in as it is awe-inspiring to look at.
