Sheffield Housing Company (SHC) has recently received planning permission to develop 41 new homes in Shirecliffe, marking a significant step forward in addressing the housing needs of local people.
The new development will feature a mix of one, two, three and four bedroomed houses across the vacant housing sites on Musgrave Road, Crumpsall Drive, Crumpsall Road and Miles Road – designed to cater to a range of people and needs.
SHC is Sheffield City Council’s joint venture development company, with private developer Keepmoat and Great Places Housing Group. It was established in 2011, with an ambitious target of building 2,300 brand new mixed tenure properties on a total of 23 sites by mid-2026.
The tenure of the homes is being considered, with SHC looking into all options to deliver affordable homes where possible on its sites.
Sheffield City Council hope to consider the purchase of some of the homes to use as Council housing, subject to approvals. Work is currently expected to start on the site in Spring 2026.
Steve Birch, Development Director at SHC, said: “We are thrilled to announce that planning for the new homes in Shirecliffe has been approved. This is a significant milestone for Sheffield Housing Company and the local community.
“The partnership has worked hard to develop a plan for the site, which suits the area, environment, community, and housing demand. As always, we will try to minimise construction disruption and will be in regular communication with neighbouring residents.”
Cllr Douglas Johnson, Chair of the Housing Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “We all know the housing pressures facing Sheffield and the country as a whole as we look to increase the number of safe, good quality homes available to people so they can set up their homes.
“Affordable housing to open up those opportunities to more people remains so important. We are delighted that work can now progress on adding these sites to the many we have publicised these past 12 months that are diversifying our city’s housing options. We look forward to that work moving forwards.”
The partnership’s entire development programme has benefitted from over £3m in funding from Homes England and more than £3m from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.
Warren Thompson, Regional Managing Director at Keepmoat Yorkshire West, said: “We’re proud to mark this latest milestone with our partners in Shirecliffe, creating 41 high-quality, affordable homes that meet the needs of the local community.
“At Keepmoat, we’re committed to building more than just homes – we’re creating sustainable neighbourhoods that support sustainable living, create jobs and fantastic places to live. Through our long-term partnership with Sheffield Housing Company and Great Places, we’re delivering homes that make a real difference.”
As well as delivering these new homes, over a 14-year period, SHC has created and safeguarded over 1,685 jobs, 120 apprenticeships and provided 3,855 training opportunities.
The partnership has spent more than £100m with construction businesses in the South Yorkshire region and contributed nearly £150,000 to local community groups, schools, public art projects and other good causes.
