Construction will start soon to build new Council homes at a site near Victoria Park, and residents came together on 20 March to mark the occasion.
Pat Turnbull, Chair of the Victoria Community Association (VCA) along with fellow residents, councillors, Meg Hillier MP, and representatives from housebuilder, Linden Homes met at the site in King Edward’s Road.
When completed in approximately 18 months, the £4million development will include 15 new Council homes for social renting, landscaped garden space, a mix of 1-4-bedroom flats, plus 17 homes for private sale to help pay for the whole development.
Ms Turnbull said:
“Only social rented homes are genuinely affordable to most Londoners, including those in Hackney. We hope that the new homes here will be built of good quality materials, be spacious, light and comfortable.”
Four apprenticeships and a quarter of the Linden Homes workforce will be drawn from Hackney residents, through the Council’s Ways Into Work programme.
Cllr Philip Glanville, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:
“Hackney Council is continuing to deliver, amid the housing crisis, new Council homes for social renting as part of a borough-wide programme and amid highly challenging financial circumstances, while supporting local residents into work.”
Graham Bridgman, land director for Linden Homes Eastern, said:
“Linden Homes is pleased to have been selected to deliver this development of new homes, and it’s an excellent example of a mix of homes sitting well together in the local area.”
Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, said:
“I stand up and address Parliament week in and week out about the need for more affordable housing. Nationally, there are councils talking about building new homes, but Hackney is actually doing it.”
Work on the scheme is scheduled to commence shortly, as part of a borough-wide Council housing regeneration programme delivering more than 2,760 homes for social renting, shared ownership and private sale. So far 201 for social renting and 20 for shared ownership have been completed, with 42 for private sale built to help pay for them.
