Newly Launched Construction Career Scheme for Young People

Independent housebuilder Dandara is encouraging young people to consider a career in housing and construction with the launch of its first ever management trainee scheme.

With recent statistics revealing that only 6% of young people are considering careers in construction, Dandara is aiming to combat this trend by offering a comprehensive training programme covering various disciplines, including surveying, technical, sustainability, design, and construction management. By providing hands-on experience and mentorship, the scheme not only seeks to address the skills gap but also showcases the diverse and rewarding career opportunities available in the housebuilding industry.

Launched in September this year, the two-year management trainee scheme has welcomed seven participants keen to explore diverse disciplines within the company.

Alison Murphy, Learning and Development Manager at Dandara, highlights the importance of such training programmes in addressing the skills gap and fostering a passion for construction. She comments: “Many people don’t realise just how diverse the construction industry is – there really is a role for everyone, whether in marketing, design, or construction,” she explained. “It’s been fantastic to welcome seven individuals into this programme across our offices in England. I am excited to be working with them throughout the next two years to help foster their learning and development across the business.”

Trevor Dempsey, CEO at Dandara, added: “As someone who entered the industry through a trainee management programme, launching our scheme, offering A-Level leavers an opportunity to explore all areas of the business, was really important for me.

“The industry does well with apprenticeships and graduates, but there’s less for those not taking the university route. This programme helps bridge that gap while addressing the real skills shortage we face. Trainees will rotate across departments like site management, quantity surveying, land, and sales, gaining hands-on experience while working towards key qualifications.”
