Meadfleet’s Biodiversity-Led Open Space Management programme has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Biodiversity and Nature category at the 2026 Unlock Net Zero Awards, recognising its commitment to delivering measurable nature recovery across residential developments throughout England and Wales.
The shortlisting recognises Meadfleet’s flagship Buzz & Flutter programme, a five-year biodiversity initiative designed to enhance habitats, support wildlife and engage communities across the company’s growing portfolio of managed open spaces.
Managing more than 545 acres of public open space across over 350 residential developments and more than 43,000 customers, Meadfleet has spent more than three decades providing specialist open space management services to the housebuilding industry. The company believes that the long-term stewardship of green infrastructure presents a significant opportunity to contribute to both biodiversity recovery and wider sustainability objectives.
Launched in 2025, Buzz & Flutter builds on the success of Meadfleet’s award-winning Bee Friendly campaign, which ran from 2019 to 2024 and helped deliver pollinator-friendly enhancements across numerous developments. The new programme expands this approach, introducing ambitious ecological targets and a broader range of interventions aimed at creating resilient, connected habitats that support pollinators, birds and other wildlife.
The programme has been designed to demonstrate how existing residential developments can make a meaningful contribution to nature recovery through practical, scalable habitat creation and enhancement measures. Rather than focusing solely on maintenance, Buzz & Flutter embeds biodiversity improvement into the ongoing management of public open space, helping developments continue to deliver environmental value long after construction has been completed.
During the first year of the programme, significant progress has already been made towards a series of ambitious five-year targets.
Between January 2025 and February 2026, Meadfleet delivered:
- 60 of a planned 150 new oak trees
- 2.1 kilometres of a targeted 5 kilometres of native hedgerow
- 3,900 square metres of species-rich wildflower habitat
- 76,000 pollen-rich bulbs
- 639 bird feeders distributed to residents
These interventions have been carefully selected to provide tangible ecological benefits. Native hedgerows improve habitat connectivity and create wildlife corridors, helping species move through increasingly fragmented landscapes. Wildflower areas increase the availability of nectar and pollen resources for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, while tree planting contributes to carbon sequestration, climate resilience and long-term habitat creation.
The programme also supports wider environmental objectives, including improved soil health, increased water infiltration and greater resilience to climate-related pressures such as drought and heavy rainfall.
A key element of Buzz & Flutter is its evidence-led approach. Meadfleet works closely with several respected conservation organisations to ensure that interventions deliver genuine ecological value and are aligned with current best practice.
Partnerships include collaboration with Buglife, Action for Swifts and Butterfly Conservation, with expert input helping to shape habitat design, species selection and management techniques. By combining practical open space management expertise with specialist ecological knowledge, Meadfleet aims to maximise the long-term effectiveness of its biodiversity enhancements.
While habitat creation forms the foundation of the programme, community engagement is considered equally important to its success.
Meadfleet recognises that lasting environmental improvements require the support and participation of local communities. As a result, Buzz & Flutter incorporates a wide range of resident engagement initiatives designed to encourage people to connect with nature and take positive action within their own gardens and neighbourhoods.
Activities include the distribution of wildflower seeds, educational resources, school visits, ecology-led community events, wildlife competitions and practical guidance on supporting biodiversity at home.
By combining landscape-scale habitat creation with household-level behavioural change, the programme seeks to multiply its impact and create a stronger culture of environmental stewardship within the communities Meadfleet serves.
This approach reflects a growing recognition across the housing sector that biodiversity enhancement is not solely about creating habitats but also about fostering meaningful connections between people and the natural environment around them.
The recognition from the Unlock Net Zero Awards highlights the increasing importance of biodiversity within the built environment and demonstrates how long-term management organisations can play a valuable role in supporting national nature recovery ambitions.
As the industry continues to respond to challenges including biodiversity loss, climate change and the delivery of sustainable communities, Meadfleet believes that effective stewardship of open spaces will become an increasingly important component of successful placemaking.
By embedding measurable biodiversity targets into operational delivery and replicating successful interventions across a national portfolio, Buzz & Flutter provides a practical and scalable model for enhancing biodiversity on both existing and future residential developments.
Commenting on the shortlisting, Meadfleet said:
“We are delighted to have been recognised by the Unlock Net Zero Awards. This shortlisting reflects the hard work of our team, our partners and the communities we work with across England and Wales. Through Buzz & Flutter, we are demonstrating that open space management can deliver far more than routine maintenance; it can actively contribute to nature recovery, support communities and create lasting environmental value. We look forward to continuing the programme and building on the progress already achieved.”
The winners of the 2026 Unlock Net Zero Awards will be announced in June.
