Children fly the flag for City West’s Amblecote Green development

School children are flying the flag for much needed new properties in Salford, as City West Housing Trust marked the completion of the first phase of its flagship Amblecote Green development.

Pupils from Dukesgate Academy took part in a parade from their school to the housing scheme in Little Hulton to celebrate the official launch of the development, which has seen family homes and bungalows built for affordable rent.

Youngsters waved specially decorated flags to welcome the arrival of the much needed new properties, as they marched to the beat of local samba band Bangdrum. City West has worked with the school throughout the development, with children even naming a street on the site Dukesgate Grove.

The new homes at Amblecote Green will provide a major boost to local families, with the area in desperate need of more affordable properties.

Children from the school are amongst the first families to move into the homes at Amblecote Green, including nine-year old Adam Finnigan who is joining Dukesgate Academy in September.

Adam has moved into a four-bedroom property on Dukesgate Grove with his parents, sister Natasha, 12, and brother Lee, 28.

Adam’s mum Mary said:

“Moving into a property on Dukesgate Grove has been a really exciting time for our family – we were living in a three-bedroom home in Bolton and we just didn’t have enough space.

“I couldn’t believe we could afford to rent a home that looks like this – it’s so trendy and modern, I’m delighted with my large kitchen and I can’t get the children out of the garden.

“The children are already making friends with other youngsters living in the street – there is a real sense of community here, and I am really enjoying getting to know the area. I can’t thank City West enough for everything they have done for us.”

Dukesgate Grove was the name selected by pupils in memory of the farm which used to be located in the area. The street has been specially designed with raised entrances to the road, providing a safe environment for children to play.

Colette McKune, Deputy Chief Executive of City West Housing Trust, said:

“We have a long-term commitment to build more houses and support those living in our communities in desperate need of a home.

“We’re delighted that phase one of the Amblecote Green development is now complete and we have already seen the impact that these homes have had on local families.”
