Eco-plasterboard innovator Adaptavate has been awarded the winner of The Big Innovation Pitch 2024 at Futurebuild, held this week at ExCeL in London.
Central to the company’s offer and their win in the ‘Dragon’s Den’ style competition at the event is Breathaboard, a “bio-based,” carbon-sequestering alternative to traditional plasterboard. This innovative material is claimed to save approximately 4 kg of carbon dioxide per square metre over rival plasterboards, within a plasterboard market that totals 13bn m² according to BIS Research.
The company, led by founder and CEO Tom Robinson, triumphed over six other finalists in the Big Innovation Pitch competition, which initially featured hundreds of entrants from across the globe. Adaptavate focuses on developing low-carbon and carbon-negative construction materials, “showcasing its dedication to revolutionising the construction industry towards a more sustainable and decarbonised future.”
Tom Robinson commented on the award win: “This is not just an accolade for Adaptavate but a validation of our mission to transform the construction industry. It’s a testament to our team’s hard work, dedication, and the belief that we can make a substantial positive impact on our planet.”
The award comes shortly after the company’s announcemed the world’s first pilot production line capable of producing Breathaboard at scale.
Looking ahead, Adaptavate aims to “leverage this win and its many other recent achievements to further its collaborations and scale up its technology worldwide.” The business is currently planning to license its technology to global manufacturers, “enabling the production of low-carbon and carbon-negative construction materials globally, utilising local resources, and making a significant impact on carbon reduction across the world.”
