Bellway applies to build 115 homes and sports pitch on former college site in Hebburn

Land vacated by South Tyneside College in 2011 could be given a new lease of life under proposals to bring new homes and a sports pitch to Hebburn.

Bellway has applied to build 115 homes and create a new pitch for public use on land in Victoria Road West, where the college’s Hebburn campus once stood.

Bellway North East, which is based in Gateshead, built a residential development on part of the former college site following its closure. This second parcel of land is currently vacant having previously been used as the college playing fields. The site has a draft allocation for up to 115 homes in the emerging Local Plan, meaning the council has identified it as potentially suitable for a development of this scale. Bellway is proposing to build two, three and four-bedroom homes, including four affordable rental properties and 10 homes available for sale at discounted market value.

Stuart Morgan, Land Director for Bellway North East, said:

“This development would help to meet demand for new private and affordable homes in South Tyneside while opening up a new sports facility for the local community to use.

“The homes would be energy efficient, featuring solar panels to provide free low-carbon electricity to residents as well as electric vehicle charging points. There would also be landscaped areas, new wildlife habitats and trees planted within the development.

“The site is in a well-connected location, with schools, shops and leisure facilities nearby, good road links and convenient access to the Metro station at Pelaw.

“Bellway has a strong track record for building high-quality homes across the North East. This site in Hebburn provides an opportunity to create a sustainable new neighbourhood which would provide the housing the area needs while supporting employment for people in the area.”

Bellway has applied to South Tyneside Council for full planning consent for the 13-acre site. The application was made following a public consultation period during which leaflets were sent to local households and a public meeting was held to talk through the plans and gather feedback.
