Great Design Ideas For Your Small Kitchen

Who doesn’t dream of a huge kitchen, filled with the most modern appliances, where cooking is not a necessity anymore but an enjoyable activity for the whole family?

Unfortunately, for most of us, this is just that, a dream. When you live in a small apartment, chances are your kitchen is not as great as you would like it to be. However, before you go all Property Brothers and start tearing walls down in the search for that desirable “open kitchen concept”, take a look at our design ideas for small kitchens: you may not need to grab a hammer just yet!

Maximise storage options

A kitchen can easily be the room in a house with the most appliances and utensils, besides, of course, any groceries. There’s never too much storage space in kitchens, which is why you should always try to increase your storage options. Here are some tips:

  • Hang up your mugs
  • Hang your pots from a rack
  • Add drawers into cabinets
  • Add a pegboard
  • Cover your walls with tier shelves
  • Be creative! You never know where you could find extra storage space

Cover your Sink

For obvious reasons, no kitchen comes without a sink. However, in small kitchens a sink can take too much of its precious countertops. Since you can’t really go without it, the best solution is so simple it’s amazing kitchens don’t come with it already: you just need a cover for your sink (quick tip: it doesn’t only work as a countertop, but it can also help you hide dirty dishes from unexpected visits!).

Get yourself a sliding door

Let’s be honest: in small spaces, regular doors tend to get in the way more often than not. But removing the kitchen door completely may not be such a good idea, as it helps contain the smells and smoke from cooking. A sliding door can be a great solution to the lack of space, while still being functional. If the sliding door is made of reinforced glass, so much better to fight the claustrophobic feeling of being in a small kitchen with a closed door.

Use collapsible furniture

If you have a small kitchen, you may have decided to forgo tables, breakfast bars and kitchen chairs. But what if I told you that you can still sit to eat in your kitchen?

Collapsible tables and chairs or even wall mounted bars are a great option. Here are 20 dining table ideas that may be the perfect fit for your small kitchen.

Go for heated floors or vertical radiators

Despite the kitchen usually being the warmest room in any house, sometimes it still needs to heat up (especially if you have the habit of eating your breakfast there). But then again, you need most of the space in your kitchen for storage and appliances. What to do in that case?

Well, this is one of the cases in which going Property Brothers sounds pretty reasonable. So, you could go for underfloor heating, which takes no space at all from the useful surface of the kitchen, is highly efficient and fantastic to walk on. But if (still) you are not keen on taking the hammer, investing in a vertical radiator could be perfect for you. These ones from Trade Radiators are electric, so you wouldn’t even need to touch the current plumbing or heating system. Even less of a hassle!
